What to choose for when you have no teeth?

  1. Psychological trauma associated with teeth loss  (elaborate)

  2. Replacement of missing teeth  (elaborate)

  3. Options (merits & demerits)

Options:

  • Complete Denture

  • Removable complete denture

  • Implant retained over- denture

  • Fixed complete denture ( hybrid denture, screwed retained denture )

Complete Denture

Advantages:

  • Can be fabricated in short time & with relative ease

  • Cheapest/ most economical of all options

Disadvantages:

  • Cumbersome to wear & chew with as it is less stable & retentive

  • Chewing force is far, far less (20%) as compared to natural teeth or fix denture

  • Speech & pronunciation is a problem due to constant shifting of the denture

  • Taste & temperature of the food eaten cannot be enjoyed with the dentures. So the contentment of eating is lost.

  • Bad for the jaw bone on which they lie, affecting the appearance of the patient.

  • Have to be removed every day for cleaning.

Implant retained overdenture

Advantages:

  • Less expensive than fix dentures

  • Better retention than conventional dentures

   Disadvantages:

  • Not as stable as fix dentures as they do permit some movements

  • Have to be removed every day for cleaning

Fixed complete denture (screw retained hybrid denture)

Advantages:

  • Fixed and stable, so patient can chew with greater force & even bite with front teeth

  • You don’t have to remove them every night for cleaning

  • No fear of your dentures popping out while talking to someone

  • No roof of denture covering your palate, so taste & temperature of the food can be enjoyed

Disadvantages:

  • Higher cost

  • Cleaning the gums beneath the denture requires some expertise
